Portland Community College – Portland, OR

Submitted by Joanne Harris, COT

2015 promises to be one of many changes for the OMT program at Portland Community College.  The search has begun for a new program director. I have led the program since its inception in 1992, and am preparing to retire at the end of the academic year.  Plans are to have a new director identified by April.

It’s also time for the program’s reaccreditation and site visit this year. Our self study was completed last summer and the CoA-OMP site visitation team will likely be here in April or May.

The program hosted our unofficial sister program students from Jikei College in Osaka Japan last October and we are planning their next visit in mid May 2015.  Proceeds from hosting these visits help to fund scholarships dedicated to our students through the Portland Community College’s Foundation.  This year, two $1,000 tuition scholarships will be awarded to students about to begin the second year of the program.

Once again, all graduation-eligible OMT students will take the JCAHPO COT certification examination June 4, 2015.  As in years past, a celebration party will be held that evening for students and their families.  Graduation this year is set for Friday, June 12th, with twenty-one students expected to successfully complete the program.
